Fruit as a type of food are parts of plants with a thick layer of flesh and a pleasant, usually sweet taste and smell. Only some botanical fruits are edible fruits, and some botanical fruits are even classified as vegetables (e.g. tomato).
On the other hand, some vegetables are processed and eaten like fruit and are legally classified as such. Examples include rhubarb petioles, sometimes also carrot storage roots, sweet potato root tubers, and tomatoes.
The fruits are associated primarily with their inviting appearance and the unique pleasure of consumption.
